“If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures, sweep streets like Beethoven composed music, sweep streets like Leontyne Price sings before the Metropolitan Opera. Sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry. Sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will have to pause and say: Here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well. If you can’t be a pine at the top of the hill, be a shrub in the valley. Be be the best little shrub on the side of the hill.”
I see it like this: where ever Christ has put you and in what ever situation you are in, find joy in, find peace and be the best in it. Which can only come from looking at Christ – he is our joy, peace and he is the best. It would be too easy to take this quote and say “work really hard to be the best and if you are not, you are a failure”. But then you have to work out what “success” and “failure” is. But from a Christian point of you, I think whether you are rich, poor, healthy, ill, in a job, unemployed – if Christ is where your eyes are fixed then all joy and peace come from Him, and you will be the brightest little shrub on the side of the hill.
