Christmas: Being brought to the Lord

treasureAdvent Day 8:

We know the offspring will bring people out of slavery and into sonship. We get a glimpse of this in Exodus. We get a glimpse of what our God is like, a God that sets captives free and hears the cries of his people. He is a God who bring his people out of slavery and calls them his treasured possession.

After he covers his people in blood, he brings them out of captivity. He leads the way into freedom. And the Lord says:

“You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all people’s, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”(Exodus 19:4-6 )

The slaves are not set free to go back into a different kind of slavery or even to a world where there is just “stuff” and delight. No, the Lord says he sets them free to be “brought to myself”. He brings his people to himself, because in him is all joy and sufficiency. He calls them his treasured possession, priests and a holy nation. They have a new identity in Him – they are to become sons and He loves them very much. He makes a new covenant with them.

Freedom in Jesus is much more beautiful than we think. We don’t just get freedom or a great inheritance, we get brought to the Lord so that we can know him. Even more so, the Son of God comes to us taking on human flesh and through the cross he brings us to the Father as a treasured possession among all people’s.

Christmas is about being brought out of slavery to the Lord as a treasured possession.
