Christmas: The Anointed King

crownAdvent Day 11

King David was a great king. He is in the line of Seth and the Lord chose him to be king –

“Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature because I have rejected him, For the Lord sees not as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the lord looks on the heart.” – (2 Samuel 16v7)

The Lord sees David’s heart and chooses him, he doesn’t choose him because he is of great height or outwardly is amazing. David’s heart is right before God.

David seems like the ideal offspring – he is chosen by the Lord and he is an anointed King to lead the people.

However things go wrong for David. Sin crouches at his door and he doesn’t rule over it. David commits adultery. It takes the prophet Nathan to rebuke him and point out his sin. This is not the chosen offspring. Although he does point to Christ, he saves his people on many accounts, he is filled with the Spirit, he shows great kindness and compassion and he is anointed as king – yet this is not the offspring.

David points to the true anointed King. Just as Samuel anoints David with the horn of oil, the woman in Luke 7v36-50 anointed Jesus with expensive perfume. But Jesus was to be a different King, a great King who overcomes sin and puts it to death. He is a generous and kind King who will rule the world in love and Grace.

Christmas is about the birth of the anointed King, a King that everyone has been waiting for.
