Christmas: The Serpent Slayer

david-and-goliathAdvent Day 12:

Although we know David is not the offspring we do get a glimpse of a serpent slayer.

David is a shepherd, the youngest and seemed weak and small compared to Goliath.

Goliath is described as very tall, bronze armour and in the NIV it says that his armour had scales (17v5). He seems very serpent like. Goliath wants to fight Israel and crush them.

Israel are scared. King Saul is scared.

But David is not…David stands out in the battle field and fights Goliath. David had full trust in Lord at this point and says:

“The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of the philistine” (17v37)

David fights Goliath and kills him. He fights this serpent like man and crushes him. David saves Israel and He is their champion. Israel did nothing but mock and watch David – they added nothing to the defeat of Goliath.

Just as Jesus fights the serpent and wins, we are caught up in that victory yet we did nothing to contribute. Jesus is our champion and our saviour. Jesus is our true serpent slayer.

Christmas is about the birth of the true serpent slayer, who is our champion wins the victory for us.
