But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. (Malachi 4:2 ESV)
“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”(Malachi 4:5-6 ESV)
We await for two people. One who will prepare the way, a prophet – called Elijah (John the Baptist). He will prepare the way for the awesome day that the Lord comes. “Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.”(Malachi 3:1 ESV)
This Lord is the sun of righteousness and has healing in his wings. We wait for the Sun to rise on the cold day to bring warmth to our hearts.
We wait for healing in the pain.
And so we wait for him. We wait for the one who will prepare the way. And we wait for the Lord to come. We wait for the awesome day of the Lord.
Since Adam we have been waiting, but during that time until the end of Malachi we have been building up a picture of who this offspring is, we see him interacting with his people, we see him revealed through people and we know he is the Son of God who will become flesh.
And so we wait.
Christmas is about waiting for the Son of Righteousness who has healing in his wings.
